The Incredible Spiritual Gift The Republican Party Has Given to the American People

It has become increasingly clear to me over the past several years, that the American Republican Party, especially as it has moved further and further “right” in recent years, sparked to some significant degree and very poignantly so by the emergence of the Tea Party wing of the party--that this group of Americans (the Republican Party)--has a profoundly beautiful, and very significant spiritual gift to give to the rest of the American people. This gift, in addition, is also a very clear opportunity for all of us as well. This gift, this opportunity, of course, is the gift and opportunity of deep interior reflection and perhaps brutal self honesty.

I do not see mistakes, as it were, in the universe. So I tend to see everything as happening exactly as it "should," even if that means my taking this stance around things I would not have put into motion if I were the master of the universe. Still, I am saddened by the probable emerging fact that most American’s will not be open to this incredible gift nor opportunity from The Republican Party, and we will also probably not allow ourselves to take advantage of either. That will, in large part be, because too many of us will be too caught up in our own wildly ungrounded righteous indignation, finger pointing, outrage, emotionally driven, historic, generational, and current woundedness, and the wholesale disowning and projection onto others of our own inner demons, to notice that the enemy is and has always been...within.

During this important time, many will likely find ourselves deeply desiring to reference these famous words by Friedrich Gustav Emil Martin Niemöller….

When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.

When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I wasn't a Jew.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.

Unfortunately, most who will find her or himself quoting this often cited quote during these times that will likely be perceived by many as being times of increased fascistically fueled social conflict and separation, will do so primarily through the lens of their own internal blinders and highly developed habit energy of finger pointing and blaming others at the distinct exclusion of looking within and discovering the cavernous cache of self-deceit, lies, propensity for hurting others and all manner of allergic reactions one has to ones own inner investigation. All of that lies patiently there in wait--waiting to be found and acknowledged by you.

As a result of this, you will miss the deeper, more important message of this famous quote. The deeper message of this quote is not about failing to see the rise of fascism until it is too late. No, the deeper, more profoundly spiritual and even perhaps mystical message of this quote is all about a failure to recognize the fascist within or the inner fascist. Pure and simple. The quote does come to us from a Lutheran theologian and pastor after all.

However.

Fear not. Should you fail to accept the gift and the brilliantly polished spiritual mirror the American Republican Party is currently providing for you to grab, take a hold of, and honor the gift as an extremely valuable opportunity to deeply reflect upon the indwelling Donald Trump and the indwelling Ted Cruz and yes, even the indwelling Adolph Hitler, deeply embedded inside of you/me, there will unfortunately be many other opportunities for us to look at what is today being so stridently ignored, disowned, projected onto others, and repressed by so many on this day. You however, will not like nor welcome these opportunities that will come to you. In fact, you will like them much, much less than what is currently being presented to us today. You will despair over the fact that they have come to you with such power and such determination. Still, they shall come to you all the same. They shall come to you in the form of death and destruction and disease and various other forms and expressions of pain and suffering. All of this and more will come directly to your doorstep, break down the door to your home, and come rushing in headlong like a Texas tornado whirling into your life and even into your heart as well. It will be unstoppable. This will happen because this is a time of inner reckoning. It is also a time of awakening. And if you will not awaken while being presented with the relatively painless yet no less important lessons of an American election year cycle, then perhaps you will awaken when presented with the lessons that will break into your home with a single pointed focus and that will stay there and absolutely refuse to leave until you acknowledge their presence—and then immediately soften your heart. Indeed, these lessons will invade your home like a swarm of ravenous locusts. Yet they will not consume you.

If you believe the potential reality of a President Donald Trump or a President Ted Cruz as commander-in-chief of these United States of America is the absolute worst nightmare you could possibly conceivably experience, then you simply have not been paying attention during however many number of years you have inhabited you current shell, been taking air into your lungs and pumping blood out of your heart into the other parts of your body. And further, you have completely failed to grasp nor understand the very basic tenets of the spiritual life, nor the reality of the samsaric wheel of life, nor many other basic inner workings of life. And still. And still. And still…it is not too late. For our God is an extraordinarily loving and an extraordinarily patient God too. Hallelujah!
